John M Curry's Weekly Predictions

Predictions
Record Last Year: 42 - 29

Record this week: 6 - 0
Record this year: 19 - 4
All Time Record: 61 - 33

Note: All teams playing at home this week will have a huge advantage. They won't have to spend hours in an airport, go through all the strict security, have to fly so soon after the hijackings, and at the same time be thinking of the rescue efforts in New York. That's alot for young men to go through, and don't be surprised with some big upsets by home teams. That is why I pick all home teams in the Pac to win. North Carolina upsets FSU at home.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Southern Cal at Oregon
The Line: Oregon by 6.5
My Prediction: Oregon by 3
Oregon 24, USC 22

I can honestly say that I'm pretty confident that Joey Harrington will never lose a game at Autzen Stadium. He will always make the big play to win the game. With that said, I'll go with the Ducks even though they haven't showed me anything to give me confidence they can beat a team as talented as the Trojans. If USC can run and control the ball as easy as Utah, then the Ducks will have to play their very best. Ducks win with time running out with a Harrington to Howry pass. Though Howry didn't score a last second touchdown, it was his 22 yard reception with less than 30 seconds that set up the game winning field goal.

REST OF THE PAC

Arizona State at Stanford
The Line: Stanford by 3
My Prediction: Stanford by 6
Stanford 51, Arizona State 28

Both teams are undefeated and have played well. These teams are evenly matched, and should put on a good show. A Sun Devil victory could really jump start their season with San Jose State and Louisana-Lafette up next. With their next game at USC, this is a must win for Stanford, or they could start off conference play with an 0-2 record. Stanford looked very impressive in their win over ASU, and I was a little surprised how easy they won. A true test will come this Saturday when the Cardinal travel to USC.

UNLV at Arizona
The Line: Arizona by 3.5
My Prediction: Arizona by 14
Arizona 38, UNLV 21

The Running Rebels have the best QB in their conference in Jason Thomas, but he'll have to provide most of the offense as the team lost their top three running backs. The Cats defense looked very impressive in the wins over San Diego St and Idaho. They'll key in on Thomas, and let the supporting cast try to beat them. The spread is only 3.5, but I see a two touchdown victory, as Arizona starts the season 3 - 0. Arizona is off to a nice start, and should win # 4 this Saturday, though Gesser and the Cougs will provide a tough test.

Idaho at Washington
The Line: Washington by 24
My Prediction: Washington by 14
Washington 53, Idaho 3

I'd go with a big Husky victory on this game, but my gut tells me the Vandals are going to play hard, and keep this game close. The Husky pass defense is not the best, and Idaho's QB, John Welsh, has an excellent receiving corp. Look for Idaho to actually lead in this game early on, but UW will prevail in the end. Guess I should have stuck with my first prediction, and not my gut feeling. Huskies win big, but lose some key players to injuries. Still, they shouldn't have too much problems with Cal, and their numerous problems.

California at Washington State
The Line: Washington State by 11
My Prediction: WSU by 18
WSU 51, California 20

If the Bears lose this game, they are certain to finish last in the conference standings, and lose Coach Holmoe at the end of the year, if not sooner. I see a young talented Cougar team winning this game easily. Easily wasn't a strong enough word. The Cougs are an up and coming team, and they just might make a bowl game this year with a victory at Arizona this week.

Ohio State at UCLA
The Line: UCLA by 7
My Prediction: UCLA by 10
UCLA 13, Ohio State 6

The Bruins are healthy and playing great ball. Though Ohio State is ranked, I see the Bruins having little trouble with the Buckeyes. Look for Paus and Foster to have another big game, and set up a grudge match with Oregon State on the 29th in Corvallis. Don't know what to think about this game. Though UCLA won, it didn't play very well, and Foster is probably out of the Heisman race after fumbling 4 times. The Bruins travel to Corvallis to play Oregon State which has had three weeks to prepare. Watch Out!

Predicted order of finish as of September 24.
